![]() Microsoft Windows 1.0
This is the first release of Windows, the release which started a new era in computing. Microsoft got sued for copying the Mac OS, as you can see why. Instead of Program Manager, Windows 1.0 uses MS-DOS Executive to launch programs. It has several programs that remained with Windows throughout its span, like Write, Calculator, Notepad, etc. It also offers mouse control and pull-down menus.

Microsoft Windows 2.0
This is the second incarnation of the Windows GUI. Like Windows 1.0, MS-DOS Executive is still used to launch programs. Windows 2.0 has some new features, such as the ability to change colour schemes, windows that scroll horizontally and vertically (unlike Windows 1.0, which only scrolled horizontally), better font control, improved minimize and maximize features, among other enhancements. It's basically a souped-up version of Windows 1.0.

Microsoft Windows 3.0
Here we see things starting to get a little more familiar. The old program launcher, MS-DOS Executive is replaced with Program Manager. There is also a new design, consisting of icon groups in windows. There are also some real drawbacks, such as not being able to change virtual memory in 386 Enhanced mode, and the File Manager often cluttered the screen when you looked at subdirectories hidden deep within the hard drive. There are also many good changes, too, such as the digital option now introduced in Clock. This is a solid version of Windows.

Microsoft Windows 3.1
This may be the most popular GUI of all time. It is a simply outstanding program to use. Windows 3.1 is an overhaul of Windows 3.0. It features much better colour, the File Manager is fixed-up, and drag-and-drop is introduced. Unfortunately, version 3.1 was plagued with errors and bugs. Programs would not open. There would be uncounted "General Protection Faults". Applications would repeatedly crash. Microsoft caught on quick and released an update, Windows 3.11. This fixed many bugs and improved its stability. This is my favourite Windows version (Better than Windows 95/98), it simply flies on my 386. If you need a GUI on your rejected 386, GET THIS NOW!!
